Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in October
October is my favorite month of the year for movies. We are right in the thick of Oscar season, the festival season is alive and running, and we get some new horror movies, which, even though isn’t my favorite genre, tend to be a fun watch around this time. This October looks especially great, as two of my most anticipated movies of the year are coming out, as well as a couple really exciting horror films. Here are my picks for the most exciting movies coming out in October.
5 – SUSPIRIA (Luca Guadagnino, October 26)
There aren’t a lot of horror remakes that get me excited, especially when it is a remake of one of the most influential horror films of all-time. But Luca Guadagnino’s interpretation of Dario Argento’s horror classic looks unbelievable. A gorgeous nightmare that is sure to shock and scare anyone who sees it while also being immaculately made. The film stars Dakota Johnson, in what is sure to be the best performance of her career, and the great Tilda Swinton who has never given a bad performance ever. Argento’s original film is a landmark in the horror genre and I anticipate Guadagnino will do it justice.
4 – BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE (Drew Godard, October 12)
Bad Times at the El Royale looks like absolute bonkers. The trailers have done a great of not giving too much away. Here’s what we know: an all-star cast featuring Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson, Jeff Bridges, and Chris Hemsworth, among others, are all staying at the El Royale Hotel, a hotel that lands on both Nevada and Arizona, and they all have a secret. Michael Giacchino’s score sounds amazing and writer/director Drew Godard has flipped the script on genre filmmaking before with Cabin in the Woods, and I imagine he is going to blow our minds once again with this one.
3 – HALLOWEEN (David Gordon Green, October 19)
The Halloween franchise is one of cinema’s most iconic horror franchises, with a number of sequels and even a remake thrown in there. But what David Gordon Green is doing with this franchise is unheard of. Forget all the sequels and all the remakes, this Halloween is a sequel to the original 1978 one, as Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) has a final confrontation with the masked killer who terrorized her forty years ago. With such a unique twist on an iconic film, this is easily the most hyped horror movie of 2018. It’s going to be great to Jamie Lee Curtis back in her most iconic role and I never get sick of seeing Michael Myers on screen.
2 – A STAR IS BORN (Bradley Cooper, October 5)
Honestly, number one and two are my two most anticipated movies of the fall, so it’s more like 1A and 1B. The first trailer for Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut, A Star is Born, is hands down the best trailer of the year for me. It’s a soulful, beautiful, heartbreaking trailer featuring what is sure to be the best song of the year from Lady Gaga. From this trailer, I was immediately hooked and wanted to see the movie immediately. Every subsequent trailer has only gotten my excitement higher, as has early word out for Venice and Toronto. Cooper is a sure-fire Oscar contender, as is Lady Gaga, making her big screen debut. A Star is Born is a story that has been told a number of times, but this looks like it could be the best one yet. This is a Best Picture frontrunner and would have been number one if not for arguably the best director of the 2010’s.
1 – FIRST MAN (Damien Chazelle, October 12)
Damizen Chazelle is having one of the greatest starts to a career any director has ever had. He kicked off with Whiplash, a hot-blooded masterpiece that brought war into the music room. He followed that up with La La Land, a homage to the musicals of the 40’s and 50’s that won numerous Oscars, including a Best Director win for Chazelle. How do you follow up two award-winning hits? Make a Neil Armstrong movie, obviously. First Man looks at the life of Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling, gearing up for another Oscar run) and the dangerous mission to the moon in 1969. The trailers promise an intense, compelling film and early reactions are calling it a technical marvel. Could Chazelle win back-to-back Oscars? It’s definitely possible. But one thing is for sure: Chazelle is one of the best directors working today and we should be excited for every project that he comes out with.
